I was reading an article from Reader's Digest about a guy, his wife, and four year old son taking a challenge not to spend money on anything for 30 days. Of course bills like phone, rent or mortage, vechile payments were excluded from the spending. The goal was not to spend money at restraunts, clothing, toilietries, internet access, parking, babysitting, and even gasoline. The family was basically using what he already had from his pantry. They decided to do this as a wake-up call, a chance to rethink about their relationship with money.
They asked the selves the following questions:
Do we really need all the things we buy?
Does aquiring stuff have actual value in our lives?
Can't we be just as happy- or prehaps even happier- living on much less?
Unfortunatually, some of us do this every day. In fact I have been having finiancial matters on the brain alot lately. I'm always revising our budget, meal planning and grocery shopping list (living on mac & cheese and ramen gets a little bit old but sometimes it is needed). I ended up getting Mira, Kristina, and I on WIC. That has helped us alot. I even tried to stay away from getting on it. But with milk at $4, cheese at $6, and eggs at $2.50. So with a little over $70 dollars a month going to milk, chese, and eggs. I figured that using WIC will help me use that money I would've spent on those could go towards other things like groceries or debt.
In fact I always try to talk to Aaron about them as well. Some times that ends up in an arguement, but in any case I would like for us to be able to save money and get more debt off our backs. So I went to Family Resources here on base and got a book "138 Way to Beat the High Cost of Living" and plan on sharing a tip from it everyday. I also got a 'Better Money Management: A guide for reaching your goals' book. I'll also share the info from that as well.
Anyways in the article by the end of the month the guy ended up saving more than $2000 by not spending for a month. It can always help to know a few more tricks to living frugally.
